Made to Order vs Made to Measure: What Is the Difference?

When is a blazer made, and how is its fit decided? A clear guide to made to order, made to measure and ready-to-wear, with a closer look at our process.

Made to Order vs Made to Measure: What Is the Difference?

Made to order means a garment is produced after an order is placed. Made to measure means its fit is adapted to an individual’s measurements, while ready-to-wear uses standard sizing and is usually produced for stock. At EVA & LEO LONDON, our blazers are handmade to order in standard sizes, with selected details you can personalise.

The distinction becomes clearer when you separate two questions: when is the garment made, and how is its fit decided? Ordering a piece especially for you does not automatically mean that its pattern is changed to your measurements.

What does ready-to-wear mean?

Ready-to-wear is clothing made in standard sizes rather than fitted to one individual. You choose a design and size from the retailer’s range. If the piece is in stock, there is no production wait, although delivery still takes time.

The brand determines the silhouette, fabric and finishing details. Ready-to-wear can be beautifully constructed; the term describes sizing and a way of buying, rather than a level of craftsmanship.

What does made to measure mean?

Made-to-measure tailoring usually begins with an existing base pattern, which is adjusted to the client’s measurements. The shape starts with the maker’s design, then changes to accommodate individual proportions.

For example, Huntsman describes its made-to-measure process as beginning with a house block pattern that is amended to the client’s measurements. The precise adjustments, fittings and choices vary between makers.

Bespoke tailoring takes a different starting point: a pattern created for the individual client. The Savile Row Bespoke Association’s description connects this individual pattern with a series of fittings. Choosing a lining or a button alone does not turn a standard-size garment into bespoke tailoring.

Does made to order mean made to measure?

The terms describe different aspects of the process. A made-to-measure garment will generally also be made after it is ordered. A made-to-order garment, however, can use a standard-size pattern.

At EVA & LEO LONDON, the silhouette is our design. Each blazer is designed in London and handmade to order in Lithuania. You choose from EU 34–46, in Regular or Tall, rather than commissioning a pattern altered to your individual body measurements.

Our structured oversized silhouette combines room through the body with a sharp shoulder and a sculpted waist. That shape is built into the cut. Personalisation lets you choose selected finishing details within it.

What can I personalise in an EVA & LEO blazer?

Depending on the blazer, options may include buttons, an undercollar, a belt, sleeve lining, elbow patches and embroidery. The available choices vary by design; check the options for the particular piece you are considering.

These details change the character of the jacket while keeping its intended silhouette. Our sizing and personalisation FAQ explains the process. For a special request, contact us before placing your order.

How do I choose between Regular and Tall?

Regular and Tall are two versions of the silhouette. Tall uses a separate pattern with additional body and sleeve length for a taller frame. It is not an adjustment made to one person’s measurements.

Our fit guidance recommends your usual blazer size for the intended structured oversized silhouette, or sizing up for a more dramatic oversized look. If you are between sizes or unsure about fit or sleeve length, contact us before ordering.

How long does a made-to-order blazer take?

Our shipping policy asks you to allow three to four weeks for your blazer to be made and finished before dispatch. Shipping is complimentary to the UK and European Union. Delivery usually takes up to ten working days after dispatch, depending on your location.
